What is your favorite book?

“Beloved” by Toni Morrison. Although I had previously studied a couple of Morrison’s works, I read “Beloved” for a class in college, and it completely transformed the way I think about literature. Through weaving together our shared memories, sense of identity, and critical folk traditions, it reconstructs our cultural canvas into a new portrait of American history. “Beloved” is a work of art and truth, and it changed my life.

Where is your favorite city?

Montreal is the city of my heart. I grew up faithfully attending the Jazz Festival each summer with my family, and I just married the love of my life there (with members of my Carney Sandoe “family” also in tow!). Simply put, it is a beautiful place.

What is a favorite quote?

“Love does not begin and end the way we seem to think it does. Love is a battle, love is a war; love is a growing up.” – James Baldwin
