Janet Durgin Senior Consultant

Janet is Senior Consultant working on head of school searches.

Previous Experience

Janet served for 20 years as the founding head of school of Sonoma Academy (CA), the only independent secondary school serving Sonoma and Napa Counties. Janet was instrumental in creating the school from the ground-up: designing its schedule and curriculum, hiring all of its founding staff (many of whom still remain at the school), recruiting students, and working closely with the board of trustees to ensure the school was well-funded. Steering the school through two decades of exponential growth (from 45 students in 2001 to 330 in 2020; 8 faculty and staff to over 70), overseeing multiple capital campaigns, the design and build out of the current 35-acre campus in Santa Rosa with award-winning buildings, and the growth and development of the school's programs and curriculum.

Previously, Janet was a dedicated boarding school teacher and administrator, spending 20 years at Northfield Mount Hermon (MA), beginning as the proverbial triple threat and moving through the ranks as house director, chair of the Modern Language Department, director of international programs, and, finally, dean of curriculum, where she led a revamp of the program and schedule for the 1,100 student-school on two campuses.

She has served on the boards of the Head's Network, Megan Furth Catholic Academy, and Kawana Springs Elementary School, the charter school adjacent to Sonoma Academy.
