Athletic practice

Championing Every Dimension of Athletic Excellence.

Our Athletic Practice supports every dimension of a school’s athletics program—from hiring exceptional coaches and athletic directors to assessing program effectiveness, enhancing leadership, and building inclusive team cultures. Whether it’s strategic planning, talent searches, or program development, we help schools elevate their athletics to match their broader educational mission and inspire excellence on and off the field.

Building Character, Confidence and Community

Schools need experienced partners to assess the strengths and challenges of their athletics programs. At the same time, aspiring and established athletics leaders benefit from trusted guidance to advance their careers. We bring deep expertise in both areas—pairing a thoughtful, tailored search process with a robust network of exceptional candidates to ensure every school finds the right fit for its athletic leadership needs.

Carney Sandoe offers Athletics Assessments to help schools take a strategic, comprehensive look at the current state of their athletics programs. Led by Dr. Tim Green, an experienced and certified expert, our assessments examine department operations, policies, facilities, and leadership structures to identify strengths, surface areas for growth, and provide clear, actionable recommendations. Our athletics assessment stands apart for its unparalleled scope and depth. Backed by a one-of-a-kind benchmarking resource, we offer insights no one else in the field can match. We’ve built an extensive and uniquely comprehensive archive of data that empowers us to deliver analysis and recommendations with unmatched precision and relevance.

Each assessment includes an in-depth review of departmental materials, an on-campus visit, and conversations with key stakeholders—including the Head of School, Athletic Director, coaches, student-athletes, and parents. Findings are delivered in a detailed written report that benchmarks your program against peer institutions and outlines short- and long-term guidance for staffing, budgeting, facilities, and strategic planning. We offer continued support following the delivery of our report to ensure your school fully understands the findings and can implement the recommendations effectively. Our follow-up process provides ongoing guidance and accountability as your program develops and evolves.

With our insight and expertise, your school will be well-positioned to strengthen its athletics program and support student-athletes in meaningful, lasting ways.

Athletic Directors play a vital role in advancing a school’s mission, modeling leadership, and shaping student experiences both on and off the field. Yet the responsibilities of leading a successful athletics program—while inspiring and rewarding—can be complex and demanding. Whether seasoned or new to the role, athletic directors benefit from intentional support that sharpens their leadership, deepens their impact, and sustains their passion.

Our structured mentoring program is designed to do just that. Over the course of four months, coaches engage in regular, purposeful conversations with an experienced mentor who provides guidance, feedback, and encouragement. This cadence allows for goal-setting, reflection, and real-time course correction, all within a supportive relationship that fosters professional growth and long-term success.

Carney Sandoe offers two signature institutes designed to elevate the impact of athletic leadership in independent schools, whether you’re just beginning your journey or seeking to advance an already strong program.
