John Chandler Senior Consultant

John joined Carney Sandoe in 2012, having previously served on the CS&A Board of Advisors. The majority of his work has been in leadership searches for international schools. He has also led searches for U.S. independent schools and has consulted on governance. He has completed more than 150 searches.

John’s recent assignments include Head of School searches for some of the leading international schools in the world, including King’s Academy (Jordan), American School of London, American School of Paris, International School of Amsterdam, International School of Brussels, Jakarta Intercultural School, International School of Beijing, Shanghai American School, and Lycée Français de New York, among many others.

Previous Experience

John began his career as an English teacher at Groton School before returning to his alma mater Yale, where he was Director of Upperclass Admissions and served as a Residential Fellow of Timothy Dwight College.

In 1975, he became Director of Admissions at Brooks School (MA), serving in that capacity until 1981, during which time he led the recruitment and admission of the school’s first girls when the school went from being all-boys to coeducational. In 1981, he became Assistant Head of School of Pingree School (MA), and became Head of School in 1982, a position he held until 1996, when he became General Director of the Koç School in Istanbul, Turkey. In 2005, he became Head of School of Robert College, the oldest American school outside the U.S., also in Istanbul.

He has served as a Trustee of the Brookwood School (MA), and Pingree School, where he is now a member of the Head of School Advisory Council. He has also served as a member of the University of Northern Iowa Advisory Board on Overseas Placement, the High Advisory Council of the Private Schools Association of Turkey, the Country Day School Headmasters Association, and was previously a member of the Board of Advisors of Carney, Sandoe & Associates. He has led NEASC Accreditation Teams for several New England independent schools, as well as Candidacy Evaluation visits for the European Council of International Schools. He has been a facilitator for the NAIS Governance Through Partnership Program.

John received bachelor's and master's degrees from Yale University. He is a member of the Cruising Club of America and the Ocean Cruising Club.
