It’s April! Don’t Panic.

If you’re a job seeker looking for a position this upcoming fall, April can feel unsettling. The early flurry of activity has slowed, and if you haven’t secured a role yet, it’s easy to assume the window has closed.  But it hasn’t!

In fact, one of the most important things to understand about today’s hiring landscape is that the timeline has shifted and we have begun to see more activity later in the season.

The Hiring Season Isn’t Over

Not long ago, most hiring wrapped up by early spring. That is no longer the reality. Schools are making decisions later than they used to, and as a result, late spring and summer hires are far more common than they were a decade ago.

Schools are navigating more variables than ever. Budgets often aren’t finalized until late spring. Enrollment numbers take time to solidify. And internal staffing decisions don’t always become clear until well into schools’ second term.

Because of this, we regularly receive new openings in spring and summer, once schools have a clearer picture of their needs. In many cases, schools discover they need to hire more faculty than originally anticipated, or they need to fill roles that weren’t known earlier in the year.

Additionally, as current teachers confirm or maybe change their plans for the following year, new opportunities emerge—sometimes quickly and unexpectedly. This often leads to a second round of hiring, creating fresh momentum just when candidates may feel like things are slowing down.

Don’t Assume the Worst

One of the most common sources of anxiety this time of year is silence. You applied. Maybe you even interviewed. And then… nothing.

Lack of a school’s communication does not necessarily mean a position has been filled or that you are out of consideration. Hiring teams are busy; or conversely, may be on Spring Break. Priorities shift. Timelines change. And sometimes, searches simply take longer than anticipated.

If a job is still posted, there’s a good chance it’s still active. And if it is still in the “active referrals” section on CandidateConnect, it’s often because it remains open.  Here at Carney Sandoe, we regularly check in with schools to keep those listings current.

What You Can Do Right Now

While some aspects of the process are out of your control, there are still meaningful ways to stay proactive and position yourself well.

  1. Follow up on your follow-up.
It’s okay and even encouraged to check in again. A brief, professional note reaffirming your interest can help keep you top of mind. Sometimes hiring teams simply need a reminder that you are still interested in their specific opening and available.
  2. Don’t assume silence equals closure.
If you haven’t heard back and the position is still listed, you are encouraged to reach out professionally and tactfully. Hiring parameters can change quickly, and searches can regain momentum at any moment.
  3. Stay ready.
Late-cycle hiring often moves fast; especially just before classes end. Make sure your materials are polished, your references are prepared, and you’re ready to jump on an opportunity when it arises.
  4. Stay open.
Some of the best opportunities appear later in the season. These roles are newly created, reimagined, or unexpectedly available.

Rethinking Your Mindset

April is not the end of the road, but a pivotal point. If you don’t yet have a position for the fall, you are not behind. You are simply navigating a hiring cycle that continues to evolve, with real opportunities still ahead. So don’t panic. Stay engaged. Stay visible. Consider expanding your own search parameters and goals.  And trust that there is still movement and possibility in the months to come.
