In January 2026, Senior Consultant Kim Peeples attended The Heads Network Conference in California, where she led a workshop for aspiring women heads of school titled The Headship Accelerator. Designed to equip future leaders with clarity and confidence, the session highlighted essential insights for those considering the path to headship. As part of the workshop, Kim thoughtfully curated a concise and compelling list for participants she calls “Nuggets of Knowing”, capturing the key considerations and wisdom every prospective Head of School should reflect upon.

Pursuing a headship is more than just a career transition; it is a profound commitment rooted in extensive knowledge, self-awareness, and a clear alignment with one’s values. This journey requires not only professional readiness but also deep personal clarity, empowering leaders to inspire and guide authentically. • Knowing WHY you are interested in pursuing headship at THIS particular school;
• Knowing the accomplishments of the current head of school and any challenges they faced;
• Knowing the school’s history to know where the school is going;
• Knowing the school’s mission, vision, and values;
• Knowing the backgrounds and needs of the type of students the school serves and strives to attract;
• Knowing how the school fosters a culture of community and belonging for all stakeholders;
• Knowing the strengths and any challenges with faculty retention, recruitment, and professional development;
• Knowing the dynamics and structure of the school leadership team;
• Knowing at least five individuals who can vouch for your personal and professional character and achievements as references;
• Knowing your worth and not being afraid to negotiate fair compensation;
