2024 FORUM/DEIB

Honoring 10 Years

Hiring Event + Professional Development

FORUM/DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging) is a hiring conference and a professional development symposium for members of, allies of, and those who are learning how to better support underserved communities.

Its mission is twofold: to help build strong, diverse, and inclusive school communities by facilitating connections between job seekers and schools, and to support schools' work in equity and inclusion through robust professional development.

FORUM/DEIB: CS&A's Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion
We host this conference because of the many common themes that unite even the most disparate independent schools: the need for quality teachers and motivated students, the desire to produce students of integrity as well as intellect, and the tension between progress and tradition. Diversity and inclusion are ever-important issues for schools and candidates, issues that we are committed to through strategies like this event.

What is the format of FORUM/DEIB?

The hiring portion consists of consecutive 30-minute interview periods between job-seeking Carney Sandoe candidates and hiring schools from across the country. Interviews are pre-scheduled by schools ahead of the event.

The event also features professional development sessions facilitated by renowned keynote speakers, diversity practitioners, and school leaders. Attendees are given the opportunity to learn best practices and find inspiration from the stories shared and lessons learned.

When is FORUM/DEIB?

January 26 and 27, 2024 in Philadelphia at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel.

2024 KEYNOTE SPEAKER- Dr. Howard Stevenson

Dr. Howard Stevenson is the Constance Clayton Professor of Urban Education, Professor of Africana Studies, in the Human Development & Quantitative Methods Division of the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the Executive Director of the Racial Empowerment Collaborative, a center for research and intervention development that brings together community leaders, researchers, authority figures, families, and youth to promote racial literacy and health in families, schools and neighborhoods.  From 2015-2021, he was the Co-Director of Forward Promise, a national philanthropy office supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to fund community-based organizations that help families of color heal, grow, and thrive above the trauma of historical and present-day dehumanization.

Dr. Stevenson has received funding from the National Institutes of Health to study the coping experiences of students and educators of color in public and independent schools, the measurement of racial socialization and its’ buffering of racial stress and trauma, and the health benefits of racial literacy interventions like  PLAAY (Preventing Long-term Anger and Aggression in Youth) and SHAPE-UP: Barbers Building Better Brothers Project.   He was just recognized in October 2023 by “Word in Black,” an online news source for Black people, as one of the top 10 “Black Activists Who Changed The Mental Health Industry” based on his PLAAY (Preventing Long-term Anger & Aggression in Youth) Project.

In 2020, he received the Gittler Prize, by Brandeis University, for outstanding and lasting scholarly contributions to racial, ethnic, and/or religious relations. In 2021, Dr. Stevenson was elected to membership in the National Academy of Education (NAED). The NAEd advances high quality education research and its use in policy and practice and consists of U.S. and international associates who are elected on the basis of outstanding scholarship related to education. From 2020-2023, Dr. Stevenson was listed in the RHSU Edu-Scholar Public Influence Rankings of the top university-based scholars in the U.S. who did the most to shape educational practice and policy.

Dr. Stevenson’s research focuses on helping children and adults assert themselves during face-to-face microaggressions. Key to this racial healing work is the use of culture to reduce in-the-moment threat reactions, increase access to memory, physical mobility, and voice–all to prevent long-term health detriment.

Darryl J. Ford, Carney Sandoe's Vice President of Education Leadership Services, will be moderating the discussion. He has been a leader in private school education for more than three decades.  Most recently, Darryl served on Villanova University's Aequitas Committee to anaylze DEIB on campus and helped implement university wide changes.  In addition, he currently serves on the boards of Wilmington Friends School, AIM Academy, Cliveden of the National Trust, and the Foundation Board of the Wissahickon Charter School.  A part-time lecturer in the School Leadership Program in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania, Darryl has been able to observe and work alongside Howard C. Stevenson and will facilitate the conversation during his keynote address.
